Andrew Kelly, Route Director of the Augustine Camino, recently wrote to Fr Oliver Antao to introduce the pilgrimage route that passes through his parish.

He explained that the Camino was created in 2016 after the of St Augustine’s in Ramsgate and begins at Rochester Cathedral before travelling through Aylesford Priory, Detling, Thurnham, Hucking, Canterbury, Minster and ending in Ramsgate. He highlighted that the route is both ecumenical and distinctly Catholic, noting its visits to multiple shrines and significant relics.

As he writes, “Hundreds of pilgrims walk the route each year and their numbers are growing” and “There are now 52 stamps to collect – an indication of the enthusiasm with which local communities have
embraced the route.”
Andrew mentioned that groups regularly use the Camino, including Catholic People’s Week and Mary’s Meals, and that clergy sometimes accompany pilgrims. He encloses the guidebook, explains the Compostela system, and notes recent media attention, including coverage in the Sunday Times and
the Archbishop of Canterbury’s decision to walk part of the route.
He closed by offering to give a talk to the parish if there is interest and wishing Fr Oliver well in his new role.
