In 1973 Pope Paul VI gave permission for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to be used in the Universal Church. They are lay people who have undergone special preparation and been commissioned to allow them to assist in the distribution of the Eucharist to members of the congregation. As well as assisting with the distribution of the Eucharist, in both forms, at Mass, they may assist at a Communion service if no priest is available.

Communion to the Sick and Housebound

A very important and necessary ministry is to take communion to the sick and housebound. Most, but not all, Special Ministers of the Eucharist also do this.

How to become a Special Minister of the Eucharist.

They are practicing members of the parish who themselves can ask to be considered. Candidates should have a period of preparation before being commissioned and will need to undergo the necessary safeguarding checks (including DBS check) if they are visiting housebound parishioners.
