What is Hope for Hermione?

Our 40th Anniversary Project helped put a roof over a parish in Ghana, but in 2025 we are planning to look closer to home, specifically to the needs of one of our parishioner families. The project is ‘Hope for Herminone’

Herminone was born in 2015 and had her first seizure at the age of 17 months. It lasted for 2 hours. She continued to have seizures and in 2019 was diagnosed with epilepsy, and then in 2020 diagnosed with autism.

The hard reality is that Herminone suffers from BPAN ( Beta-propeller Protein-Associated Neurodegeneration). It’s a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system, characterized by developmental delay, seizures, and movement disorders.

So rare that there are only 100 families in the UK who are experiencing this – they would all fit inside St Peters church. You’ll find more information about the condition here. What that means is that she may suffer from Parkinson’s as a teenager.

Currently, there is no cure for BPAN, which is why her mum Caryn is committed to funding research and supporting individuals and families affected by this condition.

Mum Caryn has tried to live as normal a life as possible including taking Hermione to Brownies every week. We’ll never be able to fund all the research but maybe we can help in a small way.
